Exciting Redo

Generally speaking, alternative-fuel vehicles tend to be, well, a bit boring. That includes the Toyota Mirai, a front-engine, mid-size hydrogen fuel cell car that never really wowed anybody. But now, Toyota has completely reworked the Mirai into this exciting concept, and they're bringing it to the Tokyo Auto Show for us to drool over in person.

Nearly Finished

The all-new concept version of the zero-emission Mirai isn't necessarily production-ready. But Toyota did confirm that it's a final-stage development model of the second-gen model. The concept will be on display at "Future Expo" from October 24 until November 4 at Megaweb.

Better in All Aspects

Toyota calls the Mirai concept a major step forward for FCEVs and the world of hydrogen-powered cars in general. They claim that it carries a significantly greater range, improved driving performance, an elegant, sporty design, and increased passenger room and comfort over the outgoing model.

Desirable Object

"We have worked to make a car that customers will want to drive all the time, a car that has an emotional and attractive design and the kind of dynamic and responsive performance that can bring a smile to the driver's face," said Yoshikazu Tanaka, Chief Engineer of the Mirai. "I want customers to say 'I chose the Mirai because I simply wanted this car, and it just happens to be an FCEV.' We will continue our development work focusing on that feeling, and we hope that with the new Mirai we will be a leader in helping to realize a hydrogen energy society."

Boring to Exciting

Thus far, the first-generation Toyota Mirai, launched in 2014, hasn't quite lived up to that expectation. Somewhat odd-looking and packing a front-wheel-drive configuration, it's what we've come to expect from this sort of vehicle. Thus, it's great news that Toyota has realized this issue and is working hard to fix it.

Looks Matter

The Mirai concept certainly packs functional upgrades, but perhaps more importantly, it looks fantastic. This is a car that people will be attracted to because they like its sophisticated styling. And no matter how great a car is in any other area, looks are still very important to prospective buyers these days.

Right-Wheel Drive

Enthusiasts will also be delighted to hear that the Mirai concept's stylish design is planted over Toyota's premium rear-wheel drive TNGA platform that promises greater agility and driving performance. Wearing 20-inch wheels and a multi-layer Force Blue paint job, it certainly looks sporty.

Room For Five

The inside of the Mirai concept is certainly an upgrade as well, sporting a clean design and modern 12.3-inch screen. Owners will also be delighted to learn that thanks to the revised platform, the new Mirai can now seat five passengers instead of just four as the outgoing model does.

Coming Soon

Vastly better looking, more fun to drive, more useful, and packing 30% more driving range than the current version, the new Mirai certainly looks like a keeper. Toyota plans on launching their exciting new fuel cell-powered machine in Japan, North America, and Europe in late 2020.
