Wagon Dreams

Wagons are a major point of contention for many automotive enthusiasts, mostly because, well, we love them. Instead of some boring crossover or SUV, why wouldn't we want a stylish, low-slung passenger car with a massive cargo area, one that handles and performs like an enthusiast sedan? Sadly, wagons just aren't popular with the general public, which is why there aren't many of them, but Sugar Design recently gave us a glimpse at what a new Lexus IS Sportwagon might look like.

Trade Offs

Wagon proponents will argue that these types of vehicles are superior to higher-riding utility vehicle in a number of ways, and they aren't wrong. After all, you give up some things in terms of physics when you have a higher-riding vehicle, things that affect performance and ultimately, fun.

Many Benefits

Wagons like this theoretical IS model still look cool and handle like their sedan brethren, but at the same time, offer up just as much in terms of added utility out back. Problem is, today's new vehicle shoppers like to ride high, even if that means giving up some aspects of driving that make it fun.

Unlikely Idea

This is precisely why wagons continue to prove popular in places like Europe, though those folks are also starting to scoop up crossovers in larger quantities. Sadly, these trends mean that we aren't likely to get many more wagon options in the future - if any at all.

Meshing Perfectly

That's truly a shame, because as we can see here, a new IS wagon would look fantastic. The car's lines mesh nicely with the extended roofline, sloping back into a forward-raked rear window and giving it a very sport appearance overall.

Setting a Precedent

Unlike some other renderings we've come across, this idea also has precedent, as Lexus produced the beloved SportCross wagon years ago, which has since become a coveted collector's item. Times have changed, but we still love the idea, regardless.

Just Art

Thus, this little exercise in art is likely to remain exactly that - an exercise, and not something that will lead to an actual, physical product. Regardless, it's nice to see that such a vehicle would actually work, if new vehicle shoppers ever do decide to change their ways.
