Catalytic converter theft rates have risen to an all-time high in recent weeks, with certain Toyota and Lexus vehicles targeted frequently. Let's take a look at a few steps we can take to protect ourselves against this crime.

Why Are Catalytic Converters Targeted For Theft?

The reasons behind the commonality of cat theft are:

• Precious metals: Catalytic converters contain precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium, which are used as catalysts to convert harmful exhaust gases into less harmful ones. These metals have a high market value, making catalytic converters valuable for recycling or resale.

• Easy accessibility: Catalytic converters are located underneath vehicles and are relatively easy to access. Thieves can quickly remove them using basic tools, often within a matter of minutes.

• Lack of identification: Unlike other car parts, catalytic converters typically lack unique identifiers or serial numbers, making it challenging to trace them back to a specific vehicle. This anonymity makes them more attractive to thieves.

• Minimal security measures: Many older vehicles or certain models lack advanced security features, making them more vulnerable to theft.

• High demand: Due to stricter emissions regulations worldwide, there is an increasing demand for precious metals used in catalytic converters. As a result, the black market for these stolen parts remains active.

• Quick profit: Catalytic converter theft can yield quick profits for thieves since they can easily sell the stolen converters to scrap yards or recycling centers without much scrutiny.

• Low risk of getting caught: The process of stealing catalytic converters is relatively quick and discreet, making it difficult for law enforcement to catch thieves in the act.

So how can we protect ourselves against it?

1. Find Out Which Vehicles Are Frequently Targeted

In general, hybrid vehicles, especially older models, were particularly vulnerable to catalytic converter theft due to the higher concentration of precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium in their catalytic converters. Some of the commonly targeted vehicles include Toyota Prius, Lexus CT, Honda CR-V, as well as most pickup trucks, due to the ease of access underneath the vehicle.

Call your local law enforcement to get an idea of which vehicles are most often targeted for this type of theft in your area.

2. Park In Safe Areas

Prioritize visibility and security for their vehicles. Keeping cars in a locked garage ensures maximum safety, deterring thieves from breaking in or dealing with confined spaces. If a garage is not available, parking close to the home's driveway increases intimidation for potential thieves, as they might be caught on security cameras. Adequate lighting is crucial, as darkness attracts criminals while well-lit areas make homes inhospitable to them.

When traveling, park near well-lit buildings or walkways with high pedestrian traffic to discourage theft attempts. This reduces the likelihood of a thief targeting the car, especially for quick thefts like stealing catalytic converters. In commercial parking lots, parking in the first few rows covered by security cameras is advisable since thieves tend to avoid camera-monitored areas.

3. Install Motion-Detecting Security Systems

Investing in security cameras, motion detectors, and a home security system with a mobile app can effectively deter thieves. The system alerts authorities, activates lights, and offers additional protection for the home and property, including against catalytic converter theft.To deter catalytic converter theft, owners can take several measures: welding the converter in place or securing the bolts, using aftermarket anti-theft devices, such as cages or panels, which make removal difficult. These devices can be installed at a garage, costing much less than replacing a stolen converter (approximately $1,000). Additionally, setting a vehicle's security system to sound on vibration or impact can further discourage thieves.

4. Install Anti-Theft Devices

5. Paint and Mark Your Catalytic Converters

Most scrap dealers and recyclers are law-abiding and uninterested in criminal activities. Thieves sell catalytic converters to them for $20 to $200, while the precious metals can be resold for up to $6,000 per ounce. To deter theft, owners can make their converter stand out by painting it a bright color and visibly etching the vehicle identification number (VIN) on it, making it less appealing to thieves and aiding in identification if stolen goods are recovered.

Note: The latest theory in cat theft figures many thieves ship these stolen items to China where the metals will be extracted and sold. In that case, this method may not have much of an effect. Still, it might be worth it to go the extra mile to ensure the safety of your vehicle.
