New Aygo Concept

With the success of the city car in the European market, Toyota is investing in a revamped Aygo. In a market where it seems every company is abandoning smaller vehicles and pouring all their effort and energy into the hot-selling crossover and SUV segments, the Japanese giant is taking a different approach.

For European Roads

That is not to say that Toyota is unaware of the rapid shift in consumer demand. Far from it. But as Toyota Design and Development Centre president Ian Cartabiano points out, Europe's infrastructure isn't about to change anytime soon. Narrow streets and tighter parking spots are still a reality, which means there will be a place for A-segment vehicles for the foreseeable future.

Outselling the Competition

While the Aygo has previously shared its platform with other city cars, it looks as though Toyota will be venturing off on its own with the newest model. And that doesn't necessarily come as a huge surprise, as they've been far more successful with this segment in terms of sales volume than the competition in Europe.

Pandemic Project

Work on the new concept began last year, at the early stages of lockdown. And while the design team was able to work on the project remotely for the initial stages, they were needed back at the design center when they had to transition from digital to physical. The concept carries a lot of the personality of the outgoing Aygo, but with a lot more character. As Cartabiano describes, the division created by the black graphic gives the car a dynamic style.

City Car With Crossover Proportions

"The graphic pushes the red portion forward and up, like a sprinter on the starting blocks," the design boss remarks. He also speaks about the conscious decision on their part to differentiate the new Aygo from the competition. Although it has a lifted and more commanding stance, it's still smaller than the Yaris in dimensions, giving it an attractive crossover-like look without compromising its city car capabilities.
