Road Legal Endurance Racer

Back in 2018 when the FIA homologation regulations required World Endurance Championship competitors to build road-legal versions of their racing prototypes, Toyota's Gazoo Racing began the development of a an exciting hypercar based on their ultra-successful racing machine. The regulations soon changed, after a number of teams decided to leave the competition. But Toyota decided to keep its hypercar program alive, continuing with the development.

Toyota Hyper Car

The hypercar was to be closely comparable to the Le Mans-winning race car, from the exterior proportions to the powertrain and performance elements. The GR Super Sport was slated to have a road-legal version of the WEC race car's twin-turbo 2.4-liter V6 engine, with a matching 986 horsepower.

Challenging Project

The manufacturer has been working on developing the car for a few years now. But if race car-based hypercar undertakings like the Mercedes-AMG Project One are any indication, taming a modern-day racing machine for street use is often easier said than done.

Development Halted?

New reports indicate that after a scary incident during the testing process, the development of the GR Super Sport has been halted for the time being. Sources believe that this may spell the end of Toyota's aspirational venture. Despite these reports, some outlets have reasons to believe that while this incident sets the Toyota engineers back, it's not quite the end of the line for the promised street-legal racer.

No Word From the Horse's Mouth

Toyota has remained silent on the matter so far. Only time will tell which direction the project is headed. Unless the R&D stage of the project has hit some major dead ends, it's hard to believe the manufacturer will be abandoning it altogether. At one stage, they were even researching their potential customers to get a sense of who they would be selling these hypercars to. Still, stranger things have happened, and continue to happen in the automotive industry.
