Patent Published

These patents were filed by Toyota with the United States Patent and Trademark in September of last year. The drawings show a hot-V 8 twin turbocharged V8 engine. And having been published this month, they confirm the long-running rumors that the manufacturer has been planning a high-performance power plant for its range-topping Lexus models.

Hot-V Layout

Choosing the hot-V setup, which places the turbochargers in the center of the block, in between the cylinder heads has shown engineering advantages in high-performance applications. Traditional turbos are positioned to the side of the block. But having them nestled within the 'V' means a quicker path for exhaust flow, which minimizes turbo lag.

Performance Advantages

Squeezing the turbos within the engine block as opposed to on the side also allows for a more favorable packaging within the engine bay. Mercedes has been using this layout in their current generation of AMG cars in various tunes for a number of years now. Their 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 yields 480 horsepower in the lower range models like the C63, and over 700 horses in its most potent form under the hood of the AMG GT.

Coming in 2022

Rumors suggest the turbo V8 will be utilized in high performance versions of the LC and the LS, which will likely be called LC F and LS F respectively. It will not be seen in any of Toyota's truck or SUV applications, as those platforms are optimized for the turbo V6 mill. The new LC F and LS F models are reportedly slated for a 2022 release.

IS F on the Horizon?

One would naturally wonder, though, if the new Lexus 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, reportedly capable of 661 horsepower, would be a fitting application in another Lexus product. Naming the V8-powered Lexus IS anything but 'IS F' raised a lot of eyebrows at the time. But this information begs the question: Will Lexus be making an LS F compete against the C63 and M3 after all?
