Impossible Concept

Less than a year ago, we were introduced to a hypothetical re-imagination of the MKV Supra as an homage to the legendary marque's previous generation. Released alongside the Heritage Edition, the Targa top Supra stole the hearts of enthusiasts across the world. Toyota was quick to remind everyone, though, that this was strictly a concept, and there were never any plans of bringing this idea into production.

Performing the Surgery

For the 2021 SEMA Show, Toyota put the concepts on display in the flesh. As one would imagine, though, building a topless Supra wasn't exactly an easy task. KC Mathieu, owner of the shop who performed the transformation spoke to the difficulty of sawing the roof off of the sports car. This is a testament to the importance of the roof as a structural element.

Vintage Looks

With the roof panel taken out and the look executed, a removable Targa top was built using 3D printing. This panel retains the same lines and volumes as to the coupe's roof. Aside from that, the hand-built rear diffusor has been given an update, while other elements are carried over from the Heritage Edition model. This includes the ‘basket handle’ rear wing.

Heritage

The other half of the classically-inspired Supra concept pair, the aforementioned Heritage Edition is a more practical application. With the roof intact, none of the performance is sacrificed. The Heritage Edition parts and features give the car an undeniably awesome look.

Performance Boost

The concepts are about more than just the nostalgic look and feel, though. They also boast performance upgrades under the hood, as well as with the suspension system. The Supra's stock turbo has been modified for an 18% airflow improvement. And a new ECU manages the power plant to deliver 500 horses, as opposed to the factory 340.

All But a Dream

Adjustable coilovers help in the handling department, and larger take care of deceleration duties. As mentioned previously, there are no plans to bring the Sport Top Supra to production. And that's understandable, given the fact that the structural rigidity might become an issue with the removal of the roof. Still, we could daydream, enjoying the sight of this pair of gorgeous sports cars.
