Real Thing

We've known for some time now that Toyota was developing a Supra to compete in Japan's Super GT series in the GT300 class. The automaker hasn't tried to hide their heavily camo'd racer, after all. But at this year's Tokyo Auto Salon, the automaker "revealed" the car to the public, officially, albeit still clad in its familiar camo. But at least now we can say that the latest Supra racer is in fact a real thing.

Lone Wolf

The latest Supra racer was built to JAF-GT300 specification by GT300 team Saitama Toyopet to replace the outgoing Toyota Mark MC model. After shaking down the car at Fuji Speedway in December, the plan, for now, is to field one singular car in the series this coming season. The Supra will be driven by the returning Hiroki Yoshida and Kohta Kawaii, who replaces Shigekazu Wakisaka

Coming Soon

The GT300-spec Supra will join its more powerful brethren in 2020, the GT500 car, which is designed to go head to head with the Honda NSX-GT and Nissan GT-R in the top Super GT class. Both will be joined later on by a GT400-spec Supra, which is poised to debut sometime later this year. Toyota is also already fielding a Supra in NASCAR's Xfinity Series.

Return of the Mack

Of course, all of this marks a triumphant return for Toyota's much-beloved model to a world of racing it experienced a lot of success some years ago. The previous-gen Supra won quite a few team and driver titles when it last participated in Super GT's predecessor, the All-Japan Grand Touring Car Championship, racing from 1995-2006.

Beginning and End

Unfortunately, the Supra's return to Super GT's GT500 class also marks the end of Lexus' campaign in that series. But the RC F GT3 will continue to race in the GT300 class, at least for now. That's somewhat disappointing, but we can't blame Toyota for wanting to compete with the new Supra in every possible way it can.

V8 Power

Toyota hasn't yet confirmed all of the details surrounding its new GT300 racer, but it's all but confirmed that the new car will feature V8 power. Which would make sense, since Toyota has utilized a 3.4-liter V8 in the series for a few years now. In addition, the all-new chassis is surrounded by some new wide bodywork, which looks pretty amazing in our opinion.

Second Time Around

This latest Supra racer in what is certainly a growing family of them definitely looks promising. For fans of Super GT racing and Toyota in general (and we're among them), the future certainly looks bright. Hopefully this time around, the Supra is here to stay. And a little success on the track wouldn't hurt its chances of sticking around, that's for sure.
