Strange Pairing

Hoonigan's This vs. That series has featured all sorts of strange pairings recently, but few can compare to this bonkers tuned IS300 taking on a Chevy C10 flatbed pickup. On paper, it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, but that's precisely why we love this series. And as is usually the case, the results of the drag race between these two vehicles is also rather entertaining.

No Stocker

The Lexus IS300 in this matchup is owned by pro drifter Ken Gushi, so you know it isn't close to stock. The 2002 model year IS is powered by a wicked 1JZ inline-six powerplant that's been turbocharged to produce 280 horsepower at the wheels.

Quick Mover

That power flows through a six-speed sequential transmission to the rear wheels for ultra-quick shifts. Since it only has to move around 3,200 pounds down the track, 280 horsepower seems plenty then, especially with a pro driver behind the wheel.

No Slouch

Regardless, the C10 is no slouch, either. The work truck, which is quite literally used to haul parts, is packing a stroked out Chevy 383 cubic-inch small block with a 150 shot of nitrous that produces 565 horsepower at the crank, which flows to the rear wheels via a 700R4 automatic gearbox. It too (surprisingly) weighs around 3,200 pounds, though that weight is mostly over the front axle.

Line 'em Up

On paper, this seems like a pretty close matchup. The Chevy flatbed weighs roughly the same as the Lexus but has far more power under the hood. However, its lack of weight over the rear wheels could cause traction issues at the start. The only way to find out which is quicker, then, is to line them up for a few drag races.

Problems Arise

And of course, that's precisely what Hoonigan does here. In the first race, the Lexus leaps off the line and establishes an early lead over the C10, which appears to be sluggish after that. After the IS takes the win, the Chevy driver explains that he's having some issues with his truck's timing, but he didn't bother to bring along a timing light to diagnose them.

Sing your Song

Regardless, the two try again one more time, at which point the Lexus absolutely demolishes the classic pickup. Of course, we'd rather see a fair race between two fully functioning rides, but it is what it is. And we'll never get tired of listening to that sweet inline-six sing its song, regardless.
