Although we never give it much thought, but sedans may not be around for life. Top Lexus executive admits the sedans will be a thing of the past if they don't tremendously evolve.

Save the Sedans

1. The Sedan Fleet

For many decades, Lexus owners have shown their passion through their vehicles. The IS owners were the young, hip, or the entry-level Lexus fans, the GS owners were a step up, and whoever drove an LS was on top of the chain. The entire fleet of sedans sold by Lexus are luxurious, comfortable vehicles that can compete alongside the most reputable luxury-sedan vehicles on the market.

2. Enter The SUVs

Between the SUVs and the Crossovers, the sales have been tremendously increasing, and Lexus is no different. The Lexus RX was the best-selling Lexus in 2016, selling more than any other sedan, and the Lexus NX has been increasing in sales as well. This is a huge shift, given the Lexus, sedans take up nearly 29% of the total sales in the USA.

3. SUVs vs Sedans

There used to be a huge gap between sedans and SUVs, with handling being a big difference for instance. Sedans used to handle much differently than SUVs, but now, the Lexus RX handles just as well as any sedan on the market. In fact, even going in and out of SUVs have become easier than sedans, and technology is no different, so why are the SUVs winning? The SUVs offer everything the sedans offer, except with more capabilities and larger space, making the future of the sedans questionable.

4. Tokuo Fukuichi's Statement

Tokua Fukuichi, Lexus Chief Branding Officer, expressed his worry regarding the future of the sedans. He says, "Unless we can really offer a sedan experience you cannot have with an SUV or crossover, I think the sedan may not be able to survive if it does not evolve." Tokua thinks that the sedans don't offer anything that the SUVs don't offer. He continued, "At a certain point of time, the traditional, square, three-box sedan will go away."

5. Save the Sedans

The sedans do have a chance still; however, not with the current lineup. In order for the sedans to evolve, Lexus has to take advantage of their low center of gravity and body style. In other words, they have to make sure their sedans drive like sport cars, while maintaining comfort. Also, Lexus has to take their styling to the next level to take advantage of the body style of their sedans, like the fastback lines. For instance, the Porsche Panamera is a great example of how you can make a sedan shine when compared to a very capable SUV.
