Going Small

In Europe and Japan, tiny cars have quite a lot of appeal for a number of reasons. For starters, those that live in dense city centers know that space is at a premium, and the price of fuel is a bit shocking. Thus, cars like the new Toyota Aygo X make a ton of sense. But what about a luxurious Lexus version of this tiny commuter? Well, Japanese car site Best Car Web recently reported that such a machine is actually in development for Europe only.

Even Smaller

This new, tiny coupe will reportedly be influenced design-wise by the 2015 Lexus LF-SA concept, which was also a tiny urban commuter of sorts that obviously never came to fruition. That concept was a 2+2 that measured in at just 135.8 inches long, which is considerably shorter than even the little Aygo X, which is 145.7 inches long.

Sneak Preview

A lot of things have changed in terms of Lexus design since 2015, of course, which means that the luxury brand's version of the Aygo X would have to incorporate modern design language to work in the automaker's lineup, which Best Car Web attempted to preview with these images.

Focused on Economy

The Aygo X rides on a shortened version of the GA-B platform that underpins the Yaris and is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine that produces a mere 71 horsepower, which is to be expected from a vehicle that's laser-focused on the economy.

Going Electric?

Toyota has previously said that it will not give the Aygo X an electric powertrain, but since Lexus just announced that it intends to go all-electric in the coming years, that would obviously need to change. An EV drivetrain would also make sense in a tiny car like this, which could presumably offer up solid range thanks to its light weight.

Viable Product

The question is, however, will urban dwellers go for a tiny car that is also luxurious? Lexus has been pondering this question for years, though it hasn't yet been convinced, it would seem. Perhaps its own version of the Aygo X will change that, but it remains to be seen if buyers will go for such a combination.
