Lexus in the year 2030?
At the 46th Tokyo Motor Show, Lexus revealed a radical new concept car that shows what the brand's future might be, beyond 2030. It is called the LF-30 and is an interpretation of how Lexus could blend sustainable powertrain technology, autonomous driving, and very sleek design.
A Lexus interpretation of the gullwing door idea
The LF-30's most distinctive feature is its gullwing doors. Although there are only two doors, the cabin area is generous and configured for ingress and egress for four occupants. The cabin is also bathed in natural light, as there is a glass roof, which extends for the full top structure of the car.
A Lexus with presence
The LF-30 is not a compact concept car by any means. Nose-to-tail the vehicle measures 200-inches in length, and it is also 78.5-inches in width. The roofline is 63-inches above the ground allowing a lofty headspace for occupants. Overall proportions are purposeful and the shaping is aggressive enough in design to steal some thunder from other automakers.
Substantial car with substantial power
With an electric motor at each wheel's corner, and a large battery pack to power them all, this Lexus is not a lightweight. The LF-30 registered a curb weight is a hefty 5,291 lb. However, with 536hp provided by its combination of batteries and multiple electric motors, performance is swift and purposeful.
Dramatic front design - has a purpose
The LF-30 has very advanced illumination technology, which can be seen in this front-view of the concept car. This variable lighting system is what Lexus believes will enable car-to-car visual communication in the coming future. Vehicles will read the intention of each other, by virtue of front section color and light pattern signaling.
This is where Lexus cabin design could trend to
Don't bother searching for physical buttons here as they have all gone the way of the dinosaur. The LF-30 concept car cabin features an array of digital touch surfaces in conjunction with voice controls. Functions are also projected onto head-up surfaces for safer driving and the steering is done completely via drive-by-wire.
The future will be fast, for this Lexus
Hidden in the LF-30's floor structure is a lithium-ion battery pack with 110kWh capacity. Driving a variable traction system, the LF-30 can be rear, front, or all-wheel drive, all depending on the requirements and current terrain. Lexus claims that its futuristic gullwing concept car is good for 0-60mph in 3.6 seconds and has a true range of 311-miles before requiring a recharge.
