Will the Redesigned 2022 NX Have a Brand New Engine Lineup?

It may seem hard to believe, but the current-gen Lexus NX has been in production since 2014. That means it's time for a new model, and one is on the way for the 2022 model year. Some next-gen NX prototypes have been spied testing in recent weeks, but they've featured heavy camouflage that does a great job of hiding any styling changes. However, some recent trademark filings hint at a new engine lineup for Lexus' compact crossover.

New Lineup

Those trademark filings were for the model names NX250, NX350, and NX350h, while are a bit different from the current NX200, NX300, and NX300h. That suggests that the base 2022 NX will come with a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four, which could replace the existing turbo-four in the current NX200.

More Power?

Meanwhile, the NX350 could utilize Lexus' 3.5-liter V6 that is present in other models, while the 350h could pair that larger engine with a hybrid system - perhaps the same setup used in the RAV4 Prime, which offers up a substantial 302 horsepower combined.

Next Gen

The NX will continue to slot between the UX and RX in Lexus' crossover lineup, competing with vehicles like the Audi Q3 and BMW X1. It will also continue to share components with the RAV4, including the front-wheel-drive GA-K version of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, albeit with a bit more size for the new generation.

Updated Cabin

In addition to new exterior styling, the 2022 NX should feature a vastly updated interior that's far more modern than the current model's somewhat outdated cabin. A touchscreen is a good possibility, though the current two-row, five-seater configuration will remain.

Coming Soon

As far as when we'll actually see the 2022 NX, well, that's currently unclear. Lexus hasn't confirmed the new model just yet, but we expect it to be revealed later this year and go on sale by the end of the year or early 2022, with a starting MSRP of a little under $40k.
